Things You'll Need
Instructions
Get a container to house your mealworms. An ideal container for mealworm mating is 24-by-18-by-6 inches, or about 10 gallons. It can be made of almost any material that will hold in the bedding and worms, including plastic or glass. Drill holes in the lid of the container to create ventilation. If the container doesn't have a lid, create a top with a sheet of cheese cloth or burlap.
Fill the container with about two to three inches of bedding material. Create this mixture with one-part flour and one-part wheat bran. Ensure the materials are thoroughly mixed when placed in the container. This will become food for the mealworms.
Ensure there is moisture in the container by adding a sliced apple or potato. Be careful not to include too much of this moisture-making food. About a quarter of an apple will be enough for up to 1,000 mealworms. Place it in a shallow dish at the bottom of the container. Change out the food every few days to make sure it doesn't mold.
Add the mealworms to the container and mixture. Purchase the mealworms from a pet store. Start with at least 1,000.
Let the magic happen. Your mealworms will begin to mate and reproduce on their own from here. Store the container in a warm spot, somewhere around 80-degree Fahrenheit, to keep the mealworms comfortable and promote faster growth. Keep up the mealworm colony by replacing the bedding every month. Do this by sifting out the worms and adding them to a new container.
