How to Get Rid of Fleas in California

Fleas bug everyone, people and pets alike. In California, fleas live in the sandy coastal regions with its warm climate and humid air. The little pests are also numerous in shady, grassy areas. Pets bring these little pests indoors. California has very strict pesticide laws that prevent toxins intended for fleas to affect other creatures in the food web. But according to the California Integrated Pest Management, there are several registered pesticides available for home use. In addition, California recognizes many pet treatment systems.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the pet with flea shampoo.

You can use the oral treatment recommended by your vet immediately. You must wait three days after shampooing your pet to use a spot treatment. Spot treatments use the animals skin oils to distribute the chemical.

    • 2

Launder the pet's bedding and any throw rugs.

    • 3

Vacuum the carpet and upholstery in the affected area.

Remove cushions from furniture and vacuum beneath the cushions. Vacuum all sides of the cushions before replacing. Remove and dispose of the vacuum bag.

    • 4

Spray the furniture and carpet with a flea growth inhibitor and insecticide.

California Pest Management recommends using products that contains Methoprene or pyriproxyfen. Both these chemicals kill adult fleas and any larvae still in the carpet. Allow the carpet to dry.

    • 5

Vacuum the dry furniture and carpet a second time.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 every 10 days until the home is free of fleas.
