How to Catch a Green Leaf Bug

Katydids are members of the Tettigoniidae family of long-horned grasshoppers, though many species have cricket-like characteristics. Some species, like the greater angle-wing katydid, feature large green, oval-shaped wings that closely resemble leaves. For this reason, they are often referred to as "green leaf bugs." Catching a katydid is not a difficult process; perhaps the most challenging part is finding the insects, which are extremely adept at camouflaging themselves among their surroundings.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to an environment that supports katydids and other grasshoppers.

Tiny katydids can be found jumping in grassy or weedy areas, as well as gardens and crops. Larger insects are likely to be spotted within the leafy cover of shrubs or trees. Katydids are found during spring, fall and autumn, primarily during the warmth of midday.

    • 2

Use a net to sweep grass or weeds.

Trap smaller katydids as they attempt to escape by jumping or flying away. Larger katydids may be trapped by dragging a net over high leafy areas in shrubs or trees.

    • 3

Transfer the katydid to a jar or container that is outfitted with holes to allow air to circulate inside.

    • 4

Create a habitat for the katydid by adding fresh leaves and branches to the container.

Remove old greenery before it becomes moldy, replenishing with new cuttings and clippings in order to sustain the katydid's food source.

    • 5

Release the katydid after observing it for a few days, returning it to the habitat you initially captured it from.
