How to Identify a Leopard Moth Caterpillar

Leopard moths (Hypercompe scribonia) can be found in the northeastern, eastern and southern parts of the United States. Though the caterpillar, or larvae, of the leopard moth does not make a great pet (it's nocturnal and hibernates in the winter), briefly observing it in its natural habitat can be a great opportunity for budding young scientists to learn more about insects.

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate the size of the caterpillar. Leopard moth caterpillars range in length from 2 to 3 inches.

    • 2

Look at the bristles covering the caterpillar. Leopard moth caterpillars are often called "woolly bears" because the black bristles stick out from the body, making them resemble a small sea anemone.

    • 3

Turn the caterpillar over very gently with a small twig. Make sure not to harm the caterpillar. The spaces between the body segments of the leopard moth caterpillar display bright red-orange markings.

    • 4

Return the leopard moth to its natural habitat if it has been removed.
