How to Make a Water Supply for Honey Bees

Water is vital to the health of a beehive and proximity to a supply is a major consideration in deciding where to locate one. Bees will travel miles, if needed, to gather water. But the closer a water source is to the hive the more time the bees will spend gathering pollen and nectar. Left on their own bees will find their own source. That may end up with bees visiting pools, hot tubs or pet water bowls. Save your neighbors the irritation by building a water supply for your hive/

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a level surface near the hive but away from the bees' main flight path to help prevent the bees from defecating in the water as they fly over.

    • 2

Place the shallow container on that location. Fill with coarse gravel or small pebbles until the container is half to three-quarters full.

    • 3

Pour water into the container until the water level is near the top of the gravel or pebbles. There should be solid surfaces above the water for the bees to stand on to drink.

    • 4

      Replace the water as needed.
