How to Get Rid of Ants & Anthills

Ants are social insects that belong in the same order as wasps and bees. They are beneficial to humans because they consume many insect pests. Ants can become a problem, however, when they build their anthills in your lawn. They can deliver painful stings that can cause swelling, itching and even anaphylactic shock in people allergic to their venom. If you discover ant hills in your lawn, treat them immediately for the health and safety of your family.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate all of the ant hills on your property and apply an insecticidal dust at the entrance of each nest. Dusts are more effective when treating anthills because liquids can soak into the soil and not reach the nest.

    • 2

Make a homemade insecticidal spray to treat ants inside your home. Pour 2 tsp. of liquid dish soap in a spray bottle filled with water and spray any ants you see.

    • 3

Check the anthills the next day for any ant activity. Reapply the insecticidal dust if ants are still alive.

    • 4

Remove food sources from your lawn. Do not leave food or drinks uncovered outside. Ants will remember food sources and nest in places where they have found food before.

    • 5

Inspect your lawn on a weekly basis for ants or anthills. If you find any, treat them immediately with the insecticidal dust before the nest has a chance to grow.
