How to Catch a Pond Skater

You can catch a pond skater to remove it from a pool or just for the fun of it. Pond skaters cannot detect motion above or below the surface of the water they glide over and this makes an aerial assault work the best. Tiny, water repellent hairs on the underside of a pond skater's body allow it to run across the water's surface. Pond skaters eat smaller insects that fall into the water and they use their mouths to suck the juices of their bodies. They have long middle legs that act as paddles and rear legs that steer and stop them.

Instructions

    • 1

Extend the pole of the pool skimmer net until it's long enough to reach the pond skater.

    • 2

Angle the skimmer downward and scoop up the skater. If the skater makes a run for it, trail him with the skimmer try scooping him up in the net.

    • 3

Pull the net toward you as quickly as possible and dump the pond skater into a 5 gallon bucket filled with 1 gallon of water.
