Get 1 to 2 pounds of worms by collecting them yourself or buying them from a dealer. Buy these worms at $10 to $30 per pound from someone who has a good reputation for selling worms, or look for earthworms yourself at the edge of lawns and on sidewalks at night or after a rainfall.
Find a container to use as a place to raise your earthworms. Use a small container at first, but as your worm population grows, you may need to shift all your earthworms into a larger container. Fill this container halfway with soil, and place the earthworms inside. Gently pour another layer of dirt inside the container. Place this container inside or outside where animals won't be able to disturb your worms.
Monitor the dirt every few hours to ensure that the dirt is moist. Add water to the soil at least once every day. Pour only enough to darken the soil, which will keep your earthworms slimy and wet. Putting more than enough to darken the soil may cause your worms to drown. Place the container in a place that is always 60 and 65 degrees.
Give your worms organic scraps from the kitchen instead of throwing these wastes away. The earthworms will eventually eat and decompose these scraps completely, fertilizing the soil at the same time. Place these scraps on the outer surface of the soil once a week.
Wait for your earthworms to breed. Your earthworm population should double about every three months. Place some earthworms in your garden or farm when the container begins to burst with earthworms and cocoons.
