How to Tell the Queen Ant

In an ant colony, one female, the queen, lays all the eggs. All the worker ants are her daughters, as are the soldiers that defend the nest. A few of her eggs hatch as males, which leave the colony to mate with new queens. The queen has a few physical and behavioral characteristics that distinguish her from the other ants. If you have an ant farm, you may want to identify the queen out of interest. If you are trying to destroy an ant colony in your garden, it is necessary to destroy the queen to ensure the colony is exterminated.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the ants' bodies. Any ants with wings will probably be males or new queens. They are highly unlikely to be either workers or the queen of the colony.

    • 2

Look at the comparative size of the ants. The queen is usually much bigger than the workers, sometimes several times their size.

    • 3

Watch the ants' behavior. Soldier ants, while often big, take an active role outside the nest. The queen remains inside, where she is protected and is unlikely to move much, if at all, unless disturbed. The worker ants bring food to her while she continues laying eggs.
