Things You'll Need
Instructions
Place the wood panels on a work bench and put on safety glasses.
Position the first 14.5 x 9.75-inch end panel at the edge of the work bench so that it slightly overlaps the bench. Cut out frame rests 0.75 inches deep and 0.50 inches wide along the 14.5-inch side of the top of this end panel. The actual frames must be purchased. These will be placed in position at the end of construction.
Repeat Step 2 for the second 14.5 x 9.75-inch end panel.
Stand the right-hand 14.5 x 9.75-inch end panel vertically next to the first 19 x 9.75-inch side panel. Ask your assistant to hold the panels in place as you nail them together.
Stand the left-hand 14.5 x 9.75-inch end panel vertically next to the first 19 x 9.75-inch side panel. Both frame rests must be positioned at the top of the box. Ask your assistant to hold the panels in place as you nail them together.
Place the second 19 x 9.75-inch side panel next to the three-piece panel structure you have constructed and nail it in place. You will now have a box shape, consisting of both side panels and both end panels.
Ask your assistant to hold the first cleat against the right-hand end piece and nail it to the outside of the box, along the top of the box.
Ask your assistant to hold the second cleat against the left-hand end piece and nail it to the outside of the box, along the top of the box.
Invert the hive and nail one 0.5 x 0.5-inch raiser board to the bottom of each side panel and each end panel. The raiser board along one end panel does not go across the full length of the panel. The gap that remains creates an entrance and exit to the hive for the bees.
Nail the base panel to the hive. The base panel will be slightly larger than the hive.
Nail a 16.5 x 1 x 2-inch strip along one end side of the lid. Nail another 16.5 x 1 x 2-inch strip along the opposite end side of the lid. Nail both wood pieces to the top surface of the lid.
Turn your bee hive over and place the lid on it, with the wood strips facing up.
