How to Prepare Insect Traps

For every human on earth, more than 200,000 individual insects are here as well. From gnats to bees, insects are ubiquitous and can live in a variety of habitats, ranging from the lowest swamps to highest mountain tops. Because of their large numbers and distinctive habits, insects are a nuisance at times. If you want to lessen insects around your home, consider making and using an insect trap.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash a used plastic soda bottle with soap and water. Remove the label by soaking it in soapy water. Thoroughly rinse it out and let it dry.

    • 2

Cut the top portion off from the bottom part of the bottle with large scissors or a sharp knife. Start the cut about two thirds of the way up the bottle.

    • 3

Turn the top portion upside down and place it inside the bottom part of the bottle.

    • 4

Punch holes in opposite sides of the top and bottom portions of the bottle by using a hole punch tool.

    • 5

Push twine through the holes and tie a knot about five to eight inches above the entire container. You will use the twine to hang your insect trap.

    • 6

Pour some sugar and vinegar into a separate bowl. Precise amounts are of no importance in this step. Stir the mixture well and add enough sugar so it thickens and has a syrup-like consistency.

    • 7

Pour the syrup into your bottle. Remember that the former bottle opening is now upside down in the other part of the bottle. Pour two thirds to a full cup of the mixture through the opening so it falls into the bottom end of the bottle.

    • 8

Dice pieces of fruit, such as bananas, oranges and apples, into small chunks. Pour the small chunks into the bottom portion of the bottle as well. Dice them into small enough chunks so they fit into the mouth of the trap. Stir the entire mixture by slightly shaking the bottle.

    • 9

Place your insect trap in a problem area of your home or hang it outside to trap bugs. Insects will be attracted to the sugary mixture, but will not be able to escape once inside.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 1 through 9 when you see a collection of insects in your trap.
