Look around grassy fields and gardens. This is the simplest way of going about the hunt. Once a ladybug has been found, carefully catch it in a bug jar.

    • 2

Use your butterfly or bug net to find the hiding ladybugs quickly. Hold your net out under the tops of plants or grass. Lightly tap plants and high grass with a stick so insects and debris fall into your awaiting net just below. Dump the net out in to your jar and see what you have found.

Sweep your net back and forth in front of your path quickly when walking from one point to another through grass. This method is a way to find ladybugs that would go unseen when you're walking about or would fly away as you pass. Stop every few feet to check your net by dumping the contents into your bug jar.

Set up a bright LED lamp when it gets dark. Build a small tent out of cloth or hang cloth around the light. The bright light will attract many bugs at night. Some of the bugs will be different types of ladybugs. As they hover around the light, they will land on the cloth. Carefully and quickly catch the lady bugs in your bug jar for examination.
