How to Identify Black Butterflies with White Edges

Identifying species of butterflies you come across, whether in your back yard or far from home, can be entertaining and rewarding. With more than 750 species of butterflies in the United States, however, identifying which one you encounter can be a challenge. Noticing a few simple differences among species can help you narrow your choices to identify black butterflies with white edges.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the butterflies' coloring. For example, black may be the predominant color when the butterflies' wings are open or when they are closed.

    • 2

Check for field markings, including lines, spots, patterns, shapes and secondary colors. The markings could be on the upper or lower surface of the wings.

    • 3

Determine the butterflies' shape. Swallowtail butterflies are named for two tail-like structures on their hind wings. Several species of swallowtails are predominantly black with various markings. Among the brush-footed butterflies, Lorquin Admiral and Baltimore Checkerspot are black with white markings.

Calculate the butterfly's wingspan. Small butterflies have a wingspan from 3/4 to 1 3/4 inches. Medium-size butterflies' wingspan ranges from 1 3/4 to 3 3/4 inches, while large butterflies' wingspan can be 3 3/4 to 6 1/2 inches. Swallowtails usually fall into the medium or large category of butterflies.
