How to Treat Bees With Thymol

Thymol is derived from thyme oil and is also made synthetically. Some mouthwashes, perfumes, and nose and throat sprays have the crystalline compound as an ingredient. It is also an active ingredient in miticides, such as Api Life and Apiguard, which are used in beekeeping to fight varroa mites. Api Life comes in individual bars, while Apiguard comes in either single-use trays or a large bulk tub. Varroa mites are a large problem for beekeepers around the world, according to Greg Hunt, a Purdue University bee specialist. Varroa mites are destructive and feed on immature honeybees and adults.

Instructions

  1. Api Life VAR

    • 1

Break one Api Life VAR bar into four pieces. The product's shape is similar to granola bars or candy bars.

    • 2

Place the pieces on the top of the frames -- near the corners -- in the brood chamber, or the nursery area where the brood is.

    • 3

Repeat treatments two or more times at seven-day intervals.

    Apiguard

    • 4

Close the bottom screen board. This prevents the fumes from dissipating quickly, according to the University of Tennessee's Institute of Agriculture.

    • 5

Open the Apiguard tray. Place it in the top of the brood frame, centered over the colony, with the open tray facing upward. Brood frames are frames of the hive containing the brood. If you are using the tub, measure the correct amount of Apiguard and place it on the provided cards.

    • 6

Examine the tray after 10 days, replace it with a second tray if the first is depleted. Replace the product on Day 14, even if there is remaining product in the previous tray.
