How to: Eucalyptus Oil as a Flea Repellent

Fleas are small insects that feed on the blood of mammals. They can cause severe itching and allergies in pets and people. Eucalyptus oil is an effective way to get rid of fleas in your home. It comes from the seeds of the eucalyptus tree and produces a strong scent that fleas and other insects find unbearable. If you discover fleas in your home treat them immediately before an infestation occurs.

Things You'll Need

Spray bottle
Water
Baby shampoo
Caulk

Instructions

  Mix ¼ tsp. eucalyptus oil with 8 oz. of water in a spray bottle to make a flea repellent. You can find eucalyptus oil at your local health food store.

  Spray the eucalyptus oil solution on pet bedding, toys and carpeting at least three times a week. This will kill and repel the fleas in your home.

  Treat your pets with a natural flea shampoo. Mix several drops of eucalyptus oil with baby shampoo or a natural soap base. You can also place a few drops on your animal's collar to repel fleas.

  Vacuum your carpets thoroughly and often to remove fleas in your carpet. Immediately dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside trash container.

  Keep fleas from coming into your home. Cover any cracks or holes in your floors, siding and walls with caulk.
