Considerations
When setting up an apiary, one must consider the location of the hives, sources of pollen and the proximity of a water supply. The safety of family members and nearby neighbors also must be considered, since some people are allergic to bee stings. Some municipalities even require the signatures of neighbors before giving permission for establishing bee hives within their boundaries. In fact, California has a state requirement for the registration of apiary locations.
Law Changes
After years of banning all traces of agriculture from their city limits, many communities, such as New York City, Denver, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, have recently legalized beekeeping within their city limits. Many other towns are beginning to reconsider their laws governing this activity.
Growing Interest
Fear from people living near bee hives is one of the hurdles to removing all beekeeping regulations. However, the drive for better health and the desire for more locally produced foods, as well as the growing popularity of beekeeping is causing communities to review their laws.
