How to Feed Package Bees

Package bees are a group of bees that can be purchased and installed into a hive. Typically, package bees are used in the spring to start a brand new hive by providing the initial population for the hive. After installing the package bees into the hive, they will need an initial food source so they can begin developing the hive and before they can hunt the nearby area for sustenance. Creating a solution of sugar and water, and then placing it in a feeder designed for bee hives will provide that initial nutrition.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a batch of syrup for the package bees. Package bees are installed in the spring, and during that time, the ideal initial food source for them is a combination of sugar and water, mixed into a syrup. The exact volume needed will depend on the number of bees in the package, but the syrup should be made of a ratio of two parts water for every one part sugar. Simply mix them in a container, preferably one with a spout on the end.

    • 2

Pour the syrup into the bee feeder, taking care not to spill any on the sides.

    • 3

Install the package bees into the hive. The exact steps for doing so will depend on the type of hive and the type of package, so be sure to consult the relevant instructions for each to make sure the installation is completed properly.

    • 4

Attach the bee feeder to the hive and direct the spigot on it into the hive, close enough to the initial population that it can easily be reached.

    • 5

Monitor the level of syrup as the initial bee population gets to work building up the hive. Normally, the initial syrup mixture should prove sufficient, as bees will soon begin searching the area for other food sources. However, if the bees are prevented from making those initial forays by adverse weather, for example, keep an eye on the food source and make sure it does not dwindle into nothing. Mix up a second batch if necessary.
