How to Make a Worm Farm From an Old Refrigerator

If you have an old refrigerator collecting dust and you also have a burning desire to raise red wriggler worms, why not combine the two and turn that old refrigerator into a do-it-yourself worm farm? With basically no modifications, you can use the refrigerator and begin composting your organic through vermiculture, or worm composting. The worms make quick work of the bio-mass and leave nutrient-rich castings that make an excellent fertilizer.

Instructions

Choose a location. Lay the old refrigerator on its back. Since you probably won't be using this refrigerator to store food ever again, feel free to cut the electrical cord off of the unit.

    • 2

Open the doors on the old refrigerator. Worms need air, but they also need darkness. It will be a good idea to keep the doors on the refrigerator, but you should drill some holes in them to allow for proper ventilation.

    • 3

Choose a bedding for your worms. Old newspaper works great and so does peat moss. You can also mix multiple materials to make a suitable worm bedding. There are a number of mixtures that would be viable.

    • 4

Add moisture to the worm bedding. Worms need the bedding to be about as damp as a wrung-out sponge. Maintain this level of moisture consistently to ensure that your worms have an opportunity to thrive.

Purchase red worms from a bait store or order them online. Red worms are needed for worm composting. Put your worms in their new refrigerator habitat, close the doors, and toss your food waste into the old refrigerator. The worms will quickly work the food into an excellent fertilizer.
