How to Get Rid of Fleas if You Have Small Birds

Fleas are small wingless insects that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. They can affect pet birds just as easily as other pets. Fleas can cause a reaction in your pet bird ranging from mild skin irritation to a severe allergic reaction. They are easily spread from one bird to another so an infestation can occur quickly. If you suspect your small birds have fleas treat them immediately before an infestation occurs.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat you small birds with flea medication. Go to your local pet store where there are many products available. If the pet store brands are not effective contact your vet for a more powerful prescription brand.

    • 2

Apply a fogger spray to treat your entire house. Make sure it has an insect growth regulator that kills flea larvae and eggs. Read the directions carefully and use as directed.

    • 3

Sprinkle boric acid thinly in the carpet of every room in your home. Sweep the powder deep into the carpet's fibers with a broom. Let it sit for about 24 hours.

    • 4

Vacuum up the dead fleas the next day. Remove all vacuum bags immediately after vacuuming and discard.

    • 5

Spread boric acid along cracks and crevices and edges where flea larvae hide and hatch. Boric acid removes moisture from the flea's body, causing dehydration and death.
