Types
Three types of honey bees exist in a hive: the queen, drones and worker bees. The queen bee is much larger than the other bees and lays all of the eggs. Drone bees are male bees that mate with the queen in the summer and die in the fall. Worker bees refer to small female bees who produce honey, clean the hive and care for young bees. Worker bees live about 40 days.
Features
Worker bees produce honey throughout the spring, summer and fall. Honey provides bees with food during the winter. A hive of honeybees produces about 80 pounds of honey each year, according to Iowa State University.
Fun Fact
Honey bees must tap two million flowers to make a pound of honey, according to the University of Minnesota. Honey bees also pollinate flowers as they collect nectar.
