How to Get the Biggest Red Worms

European nightcrawlers are generally the largest red worms, growing up to 7 inches in length, They can be used for bait, placed in a compost bin or used in a science project. Several online providers and bait shops sell these worms. Although the European nightcrawler is the biggest red worm, it is relatively new to the United States. Bait shops and compost salesmen are just beginning to raise and sell the species.

  Sporting goods shops, bait shops and marinas often sell worms, or know of someone who does. Information may also be found via online sources. Inquire about the availability of European nightcrawlers.

  Purchase worms from a reputable provider. Worms can usually be shipped or sent via mail or by private carrier. If choosing a provider out of state, make sure the worms are correctly packaged. Worms do not die due to shipping; they die because of poor packaging. Chose a shipper who knows how to package worms with enough compost and bedding so the worms can make the entire trip. Ask the seller how they package the worms for long distances.

  Grow your own nightcrawlers. Purchase a worm bin along with the box of nightcrawlers. Fill it with soil, vegetable scraps and a little water. Place the worms inside. Under normal conditions the worms will breed and grow.
