Controlling a bed bug population is tedious. These small bugs are excellent at hiding in unsuspecting places and are most active at night, making them even more difficult to eradicate. Severe infestations may require professional services, many of which are available. These tiny bugs are making a comeback and commonly hitch rides on various items to gain access to your home. Common items inhabited by bed bugs include used furniture, particularly mattresses, hotel beds and suitcases after a stay in an infested area. Despite feeding on the blood of mammals, bed bugs are not known to transmit disease.

      Remove all clutter. Bed bugs will hide in clutter until night when they emerge to eat their nightly meal.

      Vacuum the room thoroughly with a strong vacuum. Target the seams of the mattress, baseboards, curtains and carpets. Steam clean carpets and mattresses for additional effectiveness.

      Clean all bedding and linens. Wash these items in hot water and dry. Scrub baseboards, window sills and walls.

      Caulk all crevices in walls and around windows. Bed bugs are very small, and use small holes to travel from room to room. Other common hiding places include holes in walls where wires and cables pass through.
