Common Tiny House Spiders in Texas

The state of Texas is home to well over 900 species of spiders. Large spiders, such as tarantulas, call the outdoors home, while smaller spiders are more likely to inhabit homes and gardens alongside humans. There are four species of spider commonly found in homes across Texas.
  1. Southern House Spider

    • The southern house spider is commonly mistaken for the brown recluse spider. The southern house spider is slightly larger than the recluse, and females are larger than males. Unlike recluse spiders, southern house spiders do not have a violin-shaped marking on their back and all eight of their eyes are clustered on the front of the head.

    Bold Jumping Spider

    • While a number of jumping spiders are found throughout Texas, the bold jumping spider is one of the most common. This spider is black with a small white marking on the back of the abdomen. Bold jumping spiders have two large eyes on the front of the head, with three small eyes on each side. Jumping spiders are commonly found in homes across Texas, and are considered harmless to humans.

    Brown Recluse Spider

    • As with jumping spiders, recluse spiders are very common in Texas. The brown recluse is one of the best known and most common. Brown recluse spiders are very small, brown in color and have a distinctive violin-shaped marking on the back of their abdomen. Brown recluses are extremely venomous, and are potentially harmful to humans. Brown recluses prefer dark living conditions, and are prone to living in closets, cellars and under furniture.

    Black Widow Spider

    • Both Southern and Western black widow spiders are found in Texas. Widow spiders are easy to identify because of their overly enlarged abdomen and skinny legs. Widow spiders are usually jet black in color, with two small red triangles that form an hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen. The eyes are arranged in two rows on the front of the face. Both the Southern and the Western black widow are extremely venomous and can cause severe harm to humans.
