Dampwood Termites
Dampwood termites are a major pest along the Pacific coast and can cause severe damage to wooden structures. Unlike other termite types, they don't nest in the soil, but live in the wood they are eating. Dampwood termites are between three-quarters of an inch and an inch long.
Drywood Termites
According to Orkin, drywood termites are the most common in the United States. Like dampwood termites, they live in the structures they feed on and cause a lot of damage by weakening them. Unfortunately, the damage might not be noticed for years and it could be too late for repairs. These termites are only about a half-inch long.
Formosan Termites
Formosan termites are often found in the southern region of the United States because they prefer warm climates. These termites are native to China and are thought to have been brought to the United States via cargo after World War II, according to Orkin. They are the most destructive termites in the United States because their colonies grow the largest. Formosan termites infest not only homes and other wooden structures, but have even been known to destroy live trees.
Subterranean Termites
These termites are about a quarter-inch long and live underground in the dirt. They build tunnels where they search for food and tunnel up to the ground level to eat nearby pieces of wood.
