Stink bugs have developed this name because they release an unpleasant odor when deterring predators or when they are crushed. Stink bugs were originally found in east Asia and were first reported in the United States in the late 1990s.

    • Due to the diet of stink bugs, they are both advantageous and harmful to plants. They feed on different plants and insects. The stink bug belongs to the Pentatomidae family, which suck sap from the fruiting parts of plants, and can considerably injure plants. Some are also harmful for the foliage. On the other hand, predatory stink bugs eat other pests, such as caterpillars, and therefore can be advantageous as well.

    • Stink bugs can be generally seen most of the year within gardens. They are especially prominent during the spring and summer when plants are blooming. The green species of stink bug produces one generation per year, while the brown and dusky ones produce two generations per year.

    • The most unique adaptation of the stink bug is given away by its name. Pentatomids produce a compound that smells bad, deterring predators; this smell also sends a message chemically to alert stink bugs nearby to present danger. Thoracic glands which produce the odor are also used for attracting mates. It can also be used for suppressing harmful microorganisms that are prone to attack them.

    • Stink bugs have a worldwide distribution, and their habitat includes fields, meadows and gardens. In North America there are 250 species of stink bugs, and more than 4,700 species in nearly 900 genera exist worldwide.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To keep stink bugs away, seal all cracks should be sealed around the house. Replace damaged screens on doors and windows. If you find a sting bug inside the house, vacuum it up and throw away the bag. If you find stink bugs outdoors, lightly spray the area with an approved insecticide. They can also be picked off by hand in the mornings when they are slow.
