Grasshoppers are insects that live everywhere in the world except the Polar regions. Grasshoppers subsist on vegetation, can grow as long as five inches in some species and differ from their close cousin, the locust, in their behavior.

    • There are over 18,000 different species of grasshoppers, according to Pestwall.com, with over 400 existing in the western states of the U.S.

    Defense

    • When a grasshopper feels threatened or someone tries to handle it, the insect will excrete what resembles a brown juice from its mouth. This is sometimes called "tobacco juice."

    Sight &Sound

    • Grasshoppers have five eyes, with two large compound eyes and three smaller eyes. This allows the insect to see in many directions and makes it difficult for a person to grab one. Grasshoppers do not have ears.

    Jumping

    • Some types of grasshoppers have the ability to jump a length equivalent to 20 times the length of their own bodies.

    Features

    • A grasshopper has holes on the sides of its body through which the insect breathes. The male grasshopper can create a sound that resembles a song by rubbing its back legs on different portions of its body.

    As Food

    • People have been known to eat grasshoppers dipped in chocolate, which is considered to be a delicacy. Grasshoppers are said to be low in fat and high in protein.
