Spiders
There are several spiders commonly found in houses in Colorado, although it is rare for any spider found in or around the home to have a dangerous bite. Many people consider these spiders as pests, but house spiders are actually an important and beneficial form of pest control, eating smaller insects they come across.
The four most common spiders found in Colorado homes are funnel, cobweb, cellar and sac spiders. Funnel spiders are the most common and are often mistaken for the more dangerous brown recluse spider. Cobweb spiders, also known as house spiders, have a small, bulbous body and inhabit sticky masses of webbing in dark corners of homes. Cellar spiders have long, thick legs and are often found in cellars, garages and small crawlspaces. Sac spiders are commonly seen in homes at night during autumn.
Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs are another common house insect in Colorado. They are normally seen from autumn through spring. The rest of the year they are found in female boxelder trees, where they mate and lay their eggs. These small insects are about 1/2-inch long as adults, and have black and red markings along their backs. They sometimes try to eat household plants, but usually don't cause much damage. They are mostly just a nuisance that crawl around homes until the cold weather passes.
Indian Meal Moth
One of the more annoying insects found in Colorado homes is the Indian Meal Moth. These small, grey moths grow about 3/8 of an inch long, with a wingspan of approximately 5/8 of an inch. Adult moths often get in the way as they fly through homes. They can be gotten rid of fairly easily, however. The caterpillars, on the other hand, pose risks to people's pantries. They can easily infest pantry foods like grains, herbs and spices, cereal products, rice, dry soups, dried fruits and vegetables. Anything that is stored in a thin bag is at risk. In order to prevent an infestation, purchase airtight, insect-proof storage containers and transfer pantry items into them.
