How to Add Dry Ice to Liquid Milk

Dry ice is comprised of pure carbon dioxide that has been transformed into a solid state. If dry ice is allowed to thaw at room temperature, it transforms into a gas state and simply disappears. Although dry ice has many legitimate functions, it's also great to use in experiments to demonstrate the different states of matter to kids. One such experiment includes adding dry ice to milk, which essentially creates carbonated milk.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a drinking glass on a flat surface.

    • 2

Pour milk into the drinking glass until it is approximately 50 percent full.

    • 3

Put on leather gloves or thick oven mitts to protect your hands from the dry ice. It's also a good idea to wear safety goggles to prevent the solution from splashing into your eyes.

    • 4

Pick up a small piece of dry ice using a pair of tongs.

    • 5

Place the pair of tongs over the open edge of the glass and slowly drop the dry ice into the milk. Don't allow the dry ice to splash.

    • 6

Watch the milk and dry ice interact. When the two ingredients mix, the milk will begin to foam, in essence creating carbonated milk.
