How to Seal Cracks as Pest Control

If you have a problem with pests, like roaches or mice, you may not need an exterminator. Spend a day thoroughly inspecting your house for cracks and holes that rodents might be using to penetrate your home and seal them up. The cracks might be in the corners of walls, around windows, underneath and inside of kitchen cabinets or behind your refrigerator. Take your time and move items around to be thorough.

Things You'll Need

Apply caulk with a caulking gun to close up open cracks around the house where pests enter. Position the mouth of the caulking gun at the top of the crack and slowly push the handle or trigger as you move downward to seal the opening. Use a wooden paint stick to push the caulk deeper into the crack and then reapply. Smooth the surface once more. Allow the caulk to dry.

For smaller cracks, use foam spray to stop pests from coming through. The foam will come out as a liquid and then harden with a tough crust after about an hour. Put the tip of the spray can nozzle as far into the crevice as possible so the liquid will seep deeply into the wall. Spray until it bubbles out of the crack to fill the leak completely. Like caulk, foam is toxic to rodents and insects.

Use steel wool to seal up larger cracks and holes in floors and walls. Pests hate the roughness of fine steel fibers. Put on a pair of work gloves and pull the steel wool apart into smaller, fluffier pieces. Stuff the wool into holes with a butter knife as far as it will go. Add more steel wool until holes are completely filled.
