Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find two glass containers, one of which is slightly smaller than the other. Place the smaller container inside the larger one. The space between the outside of the smaller container and the walls of the larger one will be your "ant viewing area."
Dig around an ant hill in your yard using a garden trowel. Scoop the soil with the ants carefully into your bucket. Dig down into the soil further to find eggs, larvae and a queen ant.
Secure the lid on the smaller container so you don't accidentally pour the ants or dirt into it. Use a funnel or paper cone to carefully add the garden soil and smaller "worker" ants to the space between the two glass containers. Then, add the eggs, larvae and queen ant.
Secure the larger container's lid tightly. Use a straight pin to poke tiny holes in the larger container's lid to provide air flow. Make sure the holes are not big enough for the ants to crawl through.
Use construction paper and tape to cover the glass container's sides up to the soil line. This simulates the dark underground environment. Remove the paper when you want to watch the ants work.
Feed your ants sugar, a drop of honey, bread dipped in sugar water and tiny pieces of fruits and vegetables. Add a moistened cotton ball for a water supply.
