How to Identify Stink Bug Insects

"Stink bug" is the name given to insects of the Pentatomidae family, one of the families falling under the suborder of Heteroptera, or "true bugs." Stink bugs derive their less than flattering name from the foul odor they produce as a means of defense. Though they are generally harmless, stink bugs can become agricultural pests. Two hundred twenty one separate species of stink bugs can be found in North America alone (see Reference 3). Though there are many different types of stink bugs, all have certain shared characteristics that makes differentiating them from other insects easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult a field guide to insects before attempting to identify one to gain a better understanding of what types of insects live in the area and what species you can expect to find.

    • 2

Observe the insect's shape. Stink bugs are "shield-shaped" when viewed from above. This means that stink bugs generally have broad wing coverings that taper off toward the end of the insect.

    • 3

Use a magnifying glass to examine the insect's head and antennae. All stink bugs have antennae divided into five segments, and most have small heads relative to their body size. Make a note of antennae segments and head size for later reference.

    • 4

Make notes on the insect's shape, size, coloration and physical characteristics. Stink bugs come in a variety of colors and sizes, so these factors alone are not enough to suggest that an insect is a stink bug.

    • 5

Use a field guide or identification key and the notes and observations you have compiled to determine if the insect is a stink bug.
