Types
There are three main species of carpet beetle--varied, furniture and black.
Appearance
All carpet beetles are winged and have six legs. Their colors vary by species, and include black, white, brown and yellow with a generally irregular or mottled pattern.
Size
Varied and furniture carpet beetles are around 1/10 inch long, while the black carpet beetle is larger at around 1/8 to 3/16 inch, according to the University of California.
Time Frame
Furniture and adult carpet beetles live four to eight weeks. Male-varied carpet beetles live two to four weeks, with females living up to six weeks.
Prevention/Solution
To prevent carpet beetles, limit the amount of lint, hair and dead insects, and remove old spider webs as well as bee and wasps nests as these structures can house carpet beetles. Once you have an infestation in your home, sticky and pheromone varieties of traps help control the pests.
