Use a Box You Already Have
Find an old shoebox or wooden box of any kind. Smaller is usually better as you can see the lightning bugs in a small area and will not have to collect as many for a dramatic light display.
Replace one side of your box with a fine mesh screen. Simple remove or cut out one side of your box and staple, glue or nail on a fine mesh screen instead.
Be sure the lid closes tightly to prevent any escaping lightning bugs. If the mesh has left a gap between the lid and the box, fill it in with a piece of rolled-up material, tape or a strip of foam to be sure it attaches tightly.
Create a small cut-out, if desired. If you are using a cardboard box, this is easily done by cutting a small square on the end or top of the box; only cut three sides. Leave the fourth side intact. When you want to put the lightning bugs in the box, simply pull the small square up and then quickly replace it. Use a piece of tape to keep it closed.
Make Your Own Box
Cut three pieces of wood, either 2x4 or 2x6, into equal lengths. 12 inches is a good length.
Place one piece on the horizontal, and attach the other two pieces on the outside of the horizontal pieces to form a U shape. It's basically a square without a top side.
Attach fine mesh screen to each side of your square to create an enclosure. All you are missing at this point is the lid.
Add two pieces of trim across the top of the mesh where the lid will go. They should lie horizontally across the mesh and attach to each of the vertical pieces. This gives you a firm area on the mesh so that there will be no gaps between the mesh and the lid over it.
Cut a piece of wood to the exact size of the opening. Measure and cut, then sand carefully for a good fit.
Use hinges to attach this piece of wood to one of the vertical sides of the box. Now you have a lid.
Attach a handle to the lid for easy opening and closing. A simple loop of ribbon works or a handle from an old kitchen cabinet.
Open the lid to put in lightning bugs, and close firmly to keep them from escaping while you enjoy the show. Be sure to handle the box gently while there are lightning bugs inside, and release them before too long so they can go about their business.
