Identification
A decrease in bust size is defined as a reduction in both the volume and weight of the breasts. While most women simply measure their breast size in terms of cup size and measurement around the body at the bust-line, it is usually the weight of the breasts that causes physical problems.
Types
There are two main methods of achieving a decrease in bust size. The first method is general weight loss, which is effective in most cases but not in all. The second, which is always effective but also more drastic, is surgical breast reduction.
Function
Weight loss serves to decrease the bust size of most women due to the fact that a woman's breasts are primarily constituted of fat. As a woman loses weight, then, she tends to burn some of the fat that was stored in her breasts. This causes a reduction in both the size and the weight of the breasts. Breast reduction surgery, on the other hand, uses surgical methods to remove fat from the breasts. This procedure, which is also called reduction mammoplasty, involves an incision around the nipple and down the lateral part of the breast. Fatty tissue is removed, the nipple is often moved higher on the breast (for aesthetic reasons), and then the breast is reconstructed in a smaller format.
Benefits
There are many potential benefits associated with decreasing breast size and weight in women with an excessively large bust. Back problems and tension headaches are both commonly associated with extremely large busts, and both can be treated by reduction in breast size. Psychologically, as well, bust reduction can be extremely positive. Some women feel very self-conscious about their large breasts and may be unhappy with the way that they look, not just with the way that they feel. Such women can be greatly helped by reducing their breast size either through weight loss or by surgery.
Expert Insight
The type of bust size reduction that is appropriate for any particular woman depends of several factors. Women who are already at a healthy weight but wish to reduce their bust size should not attempt to do so via weight loss. Women who are above a healthy weight, however, should certainly attempt to decrease their bust size using proper diet and exercise before deciding to undergo the surgical option. The surgery, of course, carries with it certain inherent risks and should only be used in extreme cases and where advised by medical professionals. Also, those with purely psychological problems regarding their bust size might be better served by entering therapy and dealing with the underlying psychological issues, not just the outward physical ones.
