Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find a box or a bag large enough to hold all of the supplies for your insect-catching kit. A long duffel bag is usually the best choice because most handled nets fit in the bag.
Purchase an insect catching net. You can find these nets in most outdoor and camping stores. They range in price and quality from $10 to over $100. You probably want one that falls somewhere in the middle of the range. Look for the right handle length for your body and swing style, and a sturdy mesh net that won't tear easily.
Gather some small jars and containers to add to your insect catching kit. Plastic is best, because glass is heavier to carry and can be dangerous if it breaks. Plastic film containers are great for transporting insects home.
Choose a flashlight to carry in your kit. A lantern-style flashlight is best because you can set it on a table or rock and use it to lure insects to you at night.
Tuck a lightweight piece of material, such as an old pillow case or small sheet, into your kit. When you set your light out to lure the insects, put the material near the light for the insects to land on.
Carry a field guide to insects in your kit. Whenever you are considering trapping a new insect that you are not familiar with, look up the insect to determine if it is dangerous or poisonous before catching it.
