Instructions
Obtain or purchase a small aquarium, preferably a narrow, rectangular one.
Find an ant colony in your yard and fill the tank approximately 2/3 full of dirt. Make sure there is a large number of ants in the dirt used.
Include a queen ant to ensure the colony will thrive. The queen is considerably larger than the others and may have wings.
Cover the tank with a loosely woven cloth or devise a cover with small air holes to allow airflow.
Feed ants bread crumbs, sugar crystals and fruits. Make sure you don't over feed the ants or the tank will become full of refuse.
Place wet leaves or cotton balls on top of the soil so that the ants receive proper moisture. Replace water source when it is dry.
Watch for queen ants struggling to the top of the soil. If you see this happening open the tank up so that they can fly out.
