Bury the poinsettia or gardenia seeds 6 inches deep in potted soil. Use a pot that is about 1 foot in diameter. Potted poinsettias will grow better than those in the earth, as the pots can be brought inside when frost threatens.
Cover the soil with a thin layer of fertilizer to encourage faster growth.
Place the pot in an area that gets plenty of sunlight.
Keep the pot watered. This may require watering daily or weekly, depending on the weather. Touch the top of the soil to determine how damp or dry it is.
If the temperature drops below 60 degrees at night, bring the pot inside.
