Carrizo Trail
Starting east of Ocotillo and finishing at Carrizo Mountain, the Carrizo Mountain Trail traverses about 9 miles. You will face more challenges in the final stretch of this trail as you will be on a narrow road and will likely encounter loose rocks. You can enjoy the trail year round, however, the best times to do this are October through June. What makes this trail worth negotiating are the views from Carrizo Mountain of Salton Sea and the Yuha Basin. You can explore a number of mining trails as well.
McCain Valley Trail
The 14-mile McCain Valley Trail allows you to take in the scenic Sacatone Overlook that offers views of Carrizo Gorge. You can also see the trestles of the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad. The trail is named after George McCain, a pioneer from Texas. Close to the end of this trail, there are reservations such as the Cuyapaipe and La Poste Indian Reservations.
Bear Valley Trail
Offering views of Cottonwood Valley and Bear Valley, the 8.2-mile Bear Valley Trail goes through Cleveland National Forest. It is best to negotiate this trail in dry weather. There are ruts in the trail that could make it dangerous when the trail is wet. The trail goes over a ridge and ends at Pine Valley. If you want to take a break to try out the recreational activities at Cleveland National Forest, you will require a pass.
Sunrise National Trail
The 24-mile Sunrise National Trail scenic byway offers picturesque mountain and forest views. You can also see the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park below you. In the spring, you will encounter wildflowers along the route, and in the fall you can see the tree leaves changing color.
