How to Make a Mesh Sunflower Feeder

Sunflower seeds are a popular treat for many species of birds, including woodpeckers, chickadees, finches, jars and magpies. Hanging a sunflower seed bird feeder can attract birds to your garden or yard, allowing you to enjoy bird-watching from the comfort of your own home. Mesh sunflower seed feeders are inexpensive and easy to make and maintain, not to mention appreciated by visiting birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the top of a plastic mesh vegetable bag, such as those that contain onions or potatoes. The mesh should be one-half inch by one-half inch or less. Open the bag from the top, being careful not to tear or rip the bag open more than is necessary.

    • 2

Fill the bag one-half to two-thirds full of unsalted sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds for birds can be purchased at many hardware stores, pet shops and some plant nurseries.

    • 3

Gather the top of the bag together. Wrap a rubber band around the gather, leaving about 1 inch of mesh above the rubber band. Continue looping and wrapping the rubber band around the gather until the rubber band is tight.

    • 4

Thread a 1-foot-long piece of string or fishing line through the mesh, just below the rubber band. Tie the ends of the string together, forming a loop.

    • 5

Hang the sunflower seed bird feeder by sliding the string or fishing line loop over a branch, hook or nail.
