How to Identify Sycamore Wood for the Fireplace

Sycamore wood is not commonly used as firewood, but, due to its abundance in certain areas, it may be the most convenient wood available and it is safe for use in a fireplace. Sycamore may be preferred as firewood due to its relatively slow burn and limited amount of popping. If you have a desire for sycamore firewood, it is important for you to be able to identify the wood from other similar woods such as maple.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the lumber and look for coloring that is predominantly white to light tan. Darker, reddish brown streaks are common. The growth rings on the end grain are easy to see due to the wood's natural lightness in color.

    • 2

Feel the surface of the wood where no bark is present. Sycamore wood has a very fine texture, so it should lack any considerable roughness to the touch.

    • 3

Smell the wood. Sycamore has little to no odor present.

    • 4

Examine the leaves, if present. Look for five distinct points to the leaf. Sycamore leaves are similar to maple leaves but are rounder, more broad and slightly "fatter." There may be a green or brown, spherical seed ball attached to the stem of the leaf.
