What Is a Bad Adaptation?

An adaptation is the evolution, revision or reworking of an organism, object or work of art. In many cases, adaptations are a positive thing, allowing these things to stay current, remain successful and ultimately for survival. However, in some cases, an adaptation does not have the success that was intended. These miscalculations and misguided attempts on the part of both humans and nature are bad adaptations.
  1. Adaptation Basics

    • In the biological world, adaptations are directed by nature. They take the form of evolutionary changes that better help a species live in their environment. These changes increase reproduction, heighten a species defenses and help them stay strong and healthy in a changing ecosystem. Conversely, adaptations can also be man-made. Man-made adaptations take the form of new versions of technology and the reworking of books, play scripts and video game concepts for the big screen.

    Organisms

    • A bad adaptation takes the form as a species grows and evolves. All adaptations in nature, good or bad, take place accidentally in the form of gene mutations. The word mutation typically has a negative connotation, and can be viewed as such when an organism is subject to a bad adaptation. However, when an mutation is positive, it is viewed as another step in the evolution of a species. Negative mutations, or bad adaptations, in the animal kingdom hinder the survival of a species. For example, a bird born with a shorter beak may have access to less food sources, and therefore, has a harder time feeding. Bad adaptations in organisms do not endure and eventually die out because it hinders the behavioral and physical survival of a species.

    Entertainment

    • Examples of bad adaptations in the entertainment industry include popular books or video games that went on to become movies that bombed. A famous song may be adapted and covered by another artist, producing a version that fans do not like as much as the original. In either example, fans are not pleased with the outcome of the reworked art form. These adaptations are typically considered bad because they lack story, plot, are not impactful, or do not capture the same spirit of the original work.

    Technology

    • Technology is ever changing and evolving. However, as technology adapts to fit the growing needs of the public, not all changes are positive, giving way to bad adaptations. Bad adaptations in technology are those that do not function with efficiency, cause the user stress and are subject to break downs. In some, but not all cases, technological adaptations end up causing more complication and headache then doing something the old fashion way.
