How to Make a Cloud in a Pan

When it comes to explaining complicated topics like meteorology to younger children, one of the best things you can do is to take them through simple, practical demonstrations of the principles involved. Evaporation and condensation are easily demonstrated by cooling and heating vapors in an enclosed space. This will help children to understate the forces at work in cloud formation.

Things You'll Need

  • Kettle
  • Frying pan
  • Glass jug
  • Ice

Instructions

    • 1

Heat a pint of water in the kettle. Pour the water into a glass jug and swill it around. Pour the water into the pan to fill it to a depth of 1 inch.

    • 2

Turn the jug upside down. Balance some ice cubes on the bottom of the jug. Spray a few squirts of aerosol into the jug.

    • 3

Lower the jug down into the water. Hold the black paper behind the jug. Shine the flashlight through the jug to see the cloud patterns forming.
