Environmental Activities for the 21st Century

Global warming, rising sea levels and depleting natural resources are all environmental issues affecting us in the 21st century. With a rising consciousness of how our behavior affects the environment, more people are increasing their efforts to reduce their ecological footprint and make less of an impact on the Earth. Learn about the issue that are impacting out world today and do your part to help the environment.
  1. 21st Century Issues

    • One of the principle issues affecting the environment in the 21st century is ozone depletion. Ozone depletion occurs when chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, are released into the atmosphere from sources, such as vehicle emissions, air conditioning systems and aerosol cans. Without the protection of the ozone layer, we are more susceptible to skin cancer and the planet's overall temperature will increase. Deforestation due to continuous logging, farming and population increase is another environmental issue that is leading to land instability and species extinction. Climate change is also leading to decreased rainfall in parts of the world, which is causing severe droughts and water shortages. Other areas are experiencing record rainfall and consequent flooding.

    Activities for the Home

    • Adults can get involved in helping the environment in a multitude of ways. One way to reduce your ecological footprint is by starting a compost pile in your backyard. Much of our household waste is compostable, such as apple cores, tea bags and grass clippings. You can reduce the amount of waste that enters a landfill by composting. You can make an effort to reduce the quantity of water you use on a daily basis with simple acts: turn off the water in between shampooing and lathering your body in the shower, turn off the water as you lather your hands in the sink, place a bucket in the shower to collect excess water for watering plants and reuse boiled water to wash dishes.

    Activities for the Community

    • You can increase environmental awareness in your community as well. Get involved with a local recycling center and organize an electronics recycling day in your community. Old appliances and electronics, such as computers, microwaves and CD players, contain hazardous materials that can damage the environment. You can also fight to spread the news of environmental issues at your workplace by starting a recycling program. Set up recycling bins around your office and encourage the supply manager to order only recyclable or biodegradable products.

    Activities for Kids

    • Teachers and parents can help change the way people think about the environment by educating children to become earth-conscious citizens. Plant a tree with kids, take them on a field trip to a local recycling center or go to a local park to pick up litter. Help your kids put on a bake sale at your local school, community center or church to raise money to save the rainforest. You can also make crafts from recyclable materials, such as a picture frame made of trash or a toilet paper roll airplane.
