Silent Hunter Tricks

Hunting is about stealth, patience and careful attention to detail. A noisy hunter is often an unsuccessful one, as any animals or birds that hear someone tromping loudly through the woods is likely to take off as quickly as possible. With some practice though, a hunter learns to be quiet enough to sneak up on a wide variety of prey.
  1. Choose the Right Time

    • When you hunt makes a difference in how easily it is to move quietly. For instance, when it is windy out, the noise of the wind makes a great natural cover to mask any noises that you make. In addition, deer have a tendency to stay stationary when it is windy. This greatly increases the chances that you will be able to get within range without making a noise that will startle the deer away.

    Bow Hunting

    • Being quiet is even more important when bow hunting, because you must be much closer to the animal in order to get a shot off. This gives the target a greater chance of hearing any noise that you make. It is very important to let your bow adjust to the temperature you are hunting in before you go out, otherwise it may creak when drawn. Moleskin should cover the rest where the arrow touches it to prevent other noise. In addition, try different clothing combinations until you find clothing that doesn't creak or make loud noises when you draw the bow.

    Choose Your Steps

    • When on the move while hunting, you need to step carefully. Some noise is always going to take place in the wild. What you need to avoid are unusual or especially loud noises. When approaching game, choose each step that you take carefully. Actually take the time to insepct the ground and make sure that you're not going to step on a branch that will snap loudly. Equally important is the need to make sure that you have solid footing on each step, because if you trip or stumble, you will certainly make enough noise to frighten any game away.

    Stop and Go

    • Anytime you move, you make noise. Even the quietest hunter in the world can't avoid making at least some noise when walking. This is why the best quiet hunters use a stop and go technique. Take a few steps, then stop for several moments. This is the only time you can be perfectly quiet. If an animal heard you while you moved, it will continue to listen attentively but not hear any further noise. This puts it back at ease so you can move a few steps closer to it.
