License Requirements and Limits
As of 2011, all dove hunters, including those who want to hunt collared doves, must have a hunting license and a migratory bird stamp. These can be bought from more than 300 licensed dealers across Arizona. At the time of publication, there was still no bag limit for Eurasian collared doves -- meaning hunters could take home an unlimited daily number.
Tips for a Collared Dove Hunt
To ensure a good hunt, know where the collared doves will be hiding. Most of the action occurs close to agricultural areas where crops are growing or have recently been cut. In the open desert areas, look in the brush and tree-lined washes, where the collared doves are most active during sunrise and sunset. If the season hasn't had any rain, then look around man-made water sources close to agricultural areas.
Hunting Areas
You can find the collared dove throughout the state of Arizona, and you can shoot doves on public land. However, be aware of the state laws, which prohibit the discharge of a firearm within one-fourth of a mile of an occupied residence without the permission of the owner. Hunters may not trespass on private property or discharge a firearm across or into a road or railway.
Gear and Equipment
You can hunt for collared doves with any type of shotgun, in any gauge, with shot sizes ranging from 7.5 to 9. Wear ear and eye protection in addition and take along bug spray, sunscreen and plenty of water. And while it is not necessary to wear orange, it is recommended that you incorporate a little into your clothes to help others see you in the field.
