How to Make a Fire Pitch

Fire pitch -- also known as pitch glue -- is a type of adhesive that can be made with simple materials you can find on your camping trip. With this glue you can easily patch up your equipment if something breaks while you are out in the wilderness and far from the nearest retailer that sells commercial glue products. As the name implies, you will need a fire to make this adhesive.

Things You'll Need

  • Pitch
  • Charcoal
  • Animal dung
  • Flat rock
  • Round rock
  • Fuel
  • Matches
  • Sticks
  • Aluminum pot or pan

Instructions

    • 1

Locate trees that you can gather pitch from. Pitch is a sticky discharge that comes from coniferous trees, such as spruce, white pine or balsam fir.

    • 2

Search the trees you find for the pitch discharge; it will be oozing from the trees' bark. The thicker the pitch, the easier it will be to handle.

    • 3

Gather some used charcoal from a campfire. The charcoal used for making fire pitch needs to be completely dry.

    • 4

Find some animal dung to use as a binding agent for the pitch glue. The dung must be from herbivores, the animals that eat mainly a plant-based diet. Herbivores include deer, rabbits and moose. You can recognize herbivore droppings because they will be small pellets that, when inspected closely, include ground up plant fibers.

    • 5

Grind up the charcoal and animal dung using a large flat rock and a smaller round rock. You need to grind equal parts of these ingredients. Be sure not to mix the ingredients together at this point, however.

    • 6

Dig a hole in the ground and fill it with coals and a fuel source. Light the coals with a match. Wait for the fire to die down. Once the flames are gone and it's just hot coals, you're ready to make the pitch.

    • 7

Lay several sticks across the hole and place an aluminum pot on the sticks. Melt the pitch in the pan first.

    • 8

Add the ground dung and charcoal. The ratio should be one part ground dung, one part ground charcoal and five parts pitch.

    • 9

Stir the ingredients with a stick. Once the ingredients are melted together, you will have a black, sticky adhesive that binds to materials effectively. Take note, however, that the material will harden quickly as it cools.
