Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine how much of the backyard will be used to make a beach. Mark the areas with rope, a garden hose or even swimming pool "noodle" floats. If you would like for your "beach" to last for more than a day or two, use decorative rocks or landscaping timbers to surround the sand area. To create a sand dune effect, you could use a bucket as a base. Fill the bucket with sand to weight it down and then pile sand around the bucket in a mound-like shape. To keep the sand dune shape, circle the area with rocks so the sand does not roll away.
Purchase some geraniums and ornamental grass to dot the landscape around your backyard seashore. Pile sand around the plastic pots the plants were purchased in to create a look of naturally growing vegetation. Either living or artificial palm fronds can also be placed in or near the sand as a decorative touch.
Buy some driftwood pieces from a local hobby or tropical fish store to place casually around the backyard beach, adding to both the authentic nature and scent of your home seashore. The driftwood could also be used to form a walkway to the sand area or to help hold sand dunes in place.
Place an outdoor fire pit or fire ring in the sand area for roasting hot dogs or to cuddle next to in the evening. If you opt to make a fire ring, use rocks or bricks and not easily flammable driftwood. Adhere to all local burning laws to avoid either an out-of-control fire or a fine.
Add a water feature to the backyard beach. An inflatable kiddie pool or portable water garden fixture will create a pleasing sound of trickling water. Children and even some adults will enjoy the opportunity to cool off in a small pool on a hot summer day, surrounded by a tropical beach scene. Grab a few beach chairs, a small beach umbrella and towels to enjoy a day of vacation-style leisure right in your own backyard.
