How to Build a Wind Break

A windbreak provides many benefits to both farmers and homeowners. On flat prairie terrain, an effective windbreak protects livestock from the harshest weather. Windbreaks also increase property values and add habitat areas for wildlife. For homeowners, a strategically placed windbreak can reduce energy costs. In the winter months, blizzards can pile snow several feet deep when the wind blows unchecked. A windbreak reduces the impact of intense snowfalls. In addition, a manicured windbreak is pleasing to the eye.

Instructions

    • 1

Map the property. A rough sketch will serve the purpose. Select the areas that need protection from the wind, such as barns, houses or feed lots. Consider how many trees and shrubs will be necessary to protect the area.

    • 2

Plant trees along the north and west perimeter of the area to be protected. Several rows of alternating types and sizes of trees and shrubbery provide the best protection in most cases. Choose trees and shrubs based upon what purpose the windbreak is going to serve. Taller trees provide greater downwind protection, while a low density windbreak results in more even snow coverage during winter.

    • 3

Maintain the windbreak. Remove dead limbs and trees to reduce fire risk. Plant new foliage to seal gaps in the treeline.
