Mix a tbsp. of sugar with a small amount of water in a jar until a syrupy mixture forms. Additional sweet, fruity ingredients, such as grape jelly or fruits such as banana, can be added to create a mixture of sweet food that attracts moths. This method of attracting moths is called sugaring, and there are many different recipes available.

Paint thin lines of the sugar mixture on various surfaces around your home, including walls, fence posts and windowsills. At nighttime, visit these locations with a flashlight to view the moths that have been attracted.

    • 3

Heat red wine and sugar in a pan until the resulting mixture is sticky and the sugar has dissolved. Dip a rope or piece of yarn in the red wine mixture, which is another method of sugaring to attract moths at night. The rope or yarn will be flexible and is easier to tie around or drape over areas that you want to attract moths to at night, such as flower gardens.

Walk around your yard at night with a flashlight, which will attract any nearby moths. You could also sit on a patio with the flashlight beam pointing upwards, which will keep the flashlight still and allow more moths to come to it. A blacklight is another form of light that will attract moths.
