How to Make a Wooden Turntable for Bonsai Work

Groom your bonsai trees gracefully with a wooden turntable. A turntable provides a 12-inch diameter area for the bonsai's pot to be set on. When you are grooming the tree, the turntable allows the pot to turn easily. Build your own turntable for bonsai work using oak boards and a Lazy Susan bearing for smooth rotation.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Compass
  • Two oak boards, 1inch by 12 inches by 12 inches
  • Band saw
  • Six-inch Lazy Susan bearing, with screws
  • Drill
  • Drill bit set
  • Screw driver

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 12-inch circle on each board and cut along the lines with the band saw so you have two 12-inch discs. One of these discs is the base, and the other is the turntable top.

    • 2

Set your Lazy Susan bearing on top of one of the discs so it is centered, 3 inches away from the edge. Draw a small dot inside each of the mounting holes. Remove the bearing from the disc and drill a hole through each dot so its diameter equals that of the mounting holes on the bearing. This is the base disc.

    • 3

Place your Lazy Susan on the top disc, just as you did with the base disc in the previous step. Screw the bearing in place using the screws provided provided.

    • 4

Position your base disc over the bottom side of the bearing so the holes in the disc line up with the holes in the bearing. Screw the bottom disc to the bearing using the screws provided.
